Tobben takes second out of 206 runners

Coming up - Saturday, Oct. 17, at Running of the Cows, Carleton College, Northfield, Minn., 10:45 a.m.

Ram review - Junior Andrew Tobben (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) posted a runner-up finish and sophomore David Kuhlmann (Readlyn/Wapsie Valley) recorded his best race as a Ram in leading the men's cross country team at Wartburg's Dan Huston Invitational Saturday in Waverly.

Cornell took sixth in the 13-team field with 134 points. The Rams finished only a point behind Wartburg and two behind Carleton. The top three places were occupied by nationally-ranked teams in No. 18 Augustana (37 points), No. 9 UW-Platteville (43) and No. 3 UW-La Crosse (90).

"We had our smallest spread (runners No. 1-5) of the season at 1:29, which is a great sign, but it's still an area we're working on improving," Cornell head coach Dan Schofer said. "Tobben ran a nice race up front and Kuhlmann had our performance of the day as our No. 4 runner. We ran a bit short-handed due to illness, but overall I liked the way our men competed."

Tobben placed second in a talented field of 206 runners. He crossed the finish line in 26 minutes, only 11 seconds off the pace set by Jason Garvins of UW-Platteville. Tobben missed his personal record by just two seconds. He scored his third top-five finish in four meets this fall.

Sophomore Chase Nowak (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain) finished 17th in 26:28, marking his fourth top-20 showing of the season. Sophomore Ben Jacobs (Three Rivers, Mich./Three Rivers) took 27th in 26:51. Kuhlmann shaved 30 seconds off his previous-best 8K time in just his third collegiate race at that distance.

Following Kuhlmann was Adam Rooyakkers (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) in 61st, Kirkwood Donavin (Salt Lake City, Utah/West) in 74th and Quin Purkey (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) in 92nd.

The Rams compete at the Running of the Cows Saturday, Oct. 17 in Northfield, Minn., in their final competition before the Iowa Conference Championships Oct. 31 in Waverly.

"We need to stay healthy and keep our focus during the next three weeks," Schofer said. "I am confident we'll be ready for our best race of the season when we go back to Waverly."
