MOUNT VERNON — Cornell senior middle linebacker Chris Gustafson (Lakewood, Colo.) has been named to the 2007 D3football.com All-West Region First Team.
 Gustafson was one of six Iowa Conference players selected to the first team, which included Central’s Tim Connell (quarterback), Greg Altmaier (linebacker) and Guy Dierikx (corner back), Luther’s Jon Stavast (offensive guard) and Coe’s Tom Breitbach (return man). Twelve more IIAC players were selected to the second and third teams.
The teams, selected in balloting by West Region sports information directors and the D3football.com staff, were chosen from 195 nominations by Division III member schools. It is the first time D3football.com has chosen all-region teams. A total of 76 players were named to the West Region Team. A complete list of teams may be found by clicking here.
Gustafson, a four-year starter, led the Rams in tackles for the third consecutive season with 135 total stops – 73 solo and 62 assisted. The 6-foot, 243-pound Gustafson established school records for solo tackles in a game (14 at Central, Oct. 27, 2007), tackles-for-loss in a season (20.0, 2007) and solo tackles in a career (219, 2004-07). He stands second on Cornell’s all-time list with 472 career tackles, nine shy of the school mark held by John Crane (481, 1998-2001).
Gustafson ranks seventh in Division III this season in solo tackles per game (7.3), 10 th in total tackles per game (13.5) and 10 th in tackles-for-loss per game (2.0). He was second in the IIAC in total tackles and tackles-for-loss. Gustafson collected at least 10 tackles in his final 17 games and 33 times in his career.
Gustafson earned first team all-IIAC honors this season and was selected to the D3football Team of the Week for the period ending Oct. 8. He also was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team.
Gustafson, a 2003 graduate of Bear Creek High School, is the son of Julie and Larry Gustafson, Lakewood, Colo.
