MOUNT VERNON — Dubuque’s high-powered offense capitalized on seven Cornell turnovers and spoiled the Rams’ 94th homecoming with a 61-21 Iowa Conference victory Saturday at Ash Park Stadium.

The Rams (2-4, 0-4) dug themselves in a big hole early by turning the ball over on their first three series. Cornell finished with four interceptions and lost three of five fumbles. Dubuque (5-1 overall, 3-1 IIAC) scored touchdowns on its first five possessions of the game and took a 51-14 lead into halftime.

Dubuque scored 34 points off Cornell turnovers, including two first-half interceptions that were returned for touchdowns. Dubuque’s 61 points are the most scored by a homecoming opponent in Cornell history. The Rams dropped to 55-33-6 all-time in homecoming games.

Trailing 28-0, the Rams got on the scoreboard with a 41-yard touchdown strike from Anthony Kobler ( Brentwood, Mo./ Brentwood) to Kyle Krogmann (DeWitt/Northeast) with three minutes left in the first quarter. Dubuque extended its lead to 44-7 late in the second quarter before Kobler hit Josh Youngblood (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) with an 11-yard touchdown pass on the final play of the first half.

Cornell’s Travion Hardman ( Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park River Forest) scored Cornell’s final touchdown on a 23-yard run with 6:29 remaining in the game. Adam Culberson ( Montevallo, Ala./ School of Math and Science) was 3-3 in PAT kicks for the Rams.

Sophomore fullback Mike Thompson ( Eaton, Colo./Windsor) led Cornell’s ground game with 68 yards on 16 carries. Hardman rushed for 43 yards on 10 attempts. Kobler was 13-of-29 passing for 166 yards with four picks. Krogmann had a team-high four catches for 82 yards.

Cornell senior middle linebacker Chris Gustafson ( Lakewood, Colo./Bear Creek) tallied a game-high 11 tackles, including three stops for loss. Sophomore safety Don Bladt finished with 10 tackles, including eight solos. Jason Williams (Mount Vernon/Mount Vernon) and James Riessen (Durant/Durant) each had eight tackles.

Dubuque quarterback Jermar Jackson ran for 102 yards and four touchdowns while completing 9-of-14 passes for 143 yards. Edric Prim led all rushers with 110 yards on 16 carries. The Spartans outgained Cornell in total yards, 549-316.

The Rams travel to play Simpson (2-4, 1-3) at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20 in Indianola.
