MOUNT VERNON — Cornell senior middle linebacker Chris Gustafson (Lakewood, Colo./Bear Creek) has been named to the D3football Team of the Week.
Gustafson tallied a career-high 18 tackles, including 5.5 stops for loss, in the Rams’ 42-7 setback against Buena Vista Oct. 6 in Storm Lake. His 13 solo tackles tied the school’s single-game record shared by Doug Pipolo (1988 vs. Monmouth) and Pat Dolphin (1986 vs. Wartburg). Gustafson helped Cornell’s defense hold Buena Vista to 2.6 yards per carry on 41 rushing attempts.
Gustafson leads the Rams (2-3 overall, 0-3 Iowa Conference) with 69 tackles this fall. He ranks second in the IIAC in tackles per game (13.8) and third in total tackles for loss (11.0). He has reached double figures in tackles in 12 consecutive games and 28 times in his career. Gustafson has 406 career tackles with 33 tackles for loss .
Other IIAC players recognized on this week’s team were Central receiver Josh Smith and Buena Vista quarterback Chris Hawkins.
Gustafson, a 2003 graduate of Bear Creek High School, is the son of Julie and Larry Gustafson, Lakewood, Colo.
