Rams surrender six TD passes in 42-7 loss at Buena Vista

Cornell linebacker Chris Gustafson’s record-tying tackle day was outdone by Buena Vista quarterback Chris Hawkins’ six touchdown passes as the Beavers rolled to a 42-7 Iowa Conference victory Saturday at J. Leslie Rollins Stadium in Storm Lake.

Buena Vista (2-3 overall, 1-3 IIAC) scored touchdowns on its first four possessions of the game and raced to a 42-0 lead early in the fourth quarter. Sophomore fullback Mike Thompson ( Eaton, Colo./Windsor) prevented the Rams (2-3, 0-3) from being shut out with a 2-yard touchdown run with 6 minutes, 15 seconds remaining.

The Rams dropped their third consecutive game since a 2-0 start to the season. Cornell was held to 208 yards of total offense while yielding 391 to the host Beavers. The Rams were penalized a season-high eight times for 112 yards.

Gustafson ( Lakewood, Colo./Bear Creek) was a bright spot for the Rams with a game-high 18 tackles, including 5.5 stops behind the line of scrimmage for minus-10 yards. The senior tied Cornell’s single-game record with 13 solo tackles, matching the marks shared by Doug Pipolo (1988 vs. Monmouth) and Pat Dolphin (1986 vs. Wartburg).

Hawkins was 18-of-27 passing for 285 yards, highlighted with scoring strikes of 19, 13, 20, 5, 50 and 56 yards. The Beavers led 21-0 after the first quarter and took a 28-0 advantage into intermission. Hawkins capped a career day with two more touchdown passes of 50-plus yards in the second half.

Cornell quarterback Anthony Kobler ( Brentwood, Mo./ Brentwood) was limited to 7-of-18 passing for 77 yards with an interception. Travion Hardman ( Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park River Forest) led the Rams’ ground game with 48 yards on 19 carries.

Cornell senior James Riessen (Durant/Durant) collected eight tackles – 1.5 for loss – and forced a fumble. Zach Zasada ( Sauk City, Wis./Sauk Prairie) had the Rams’ lone sack and Don Bladt (Shelby/AHST) recovered a fumble.

The Rams play host to Dubuque for homecoming at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13 at Ash Park Stadium in Mount Vernon.
