the News Release archive MOUNT VERNON — Cornell rallied for 20 second-half points, but couldn’t overcome a record-breaking performance from Luther kicker Tyler Pease in a 25-20 Iowa Conference loss Saturday at Ash Park Stadium. The left-footed Pease set an IIAC single-game record with six made field goals. Pease was perfect with his attempts from 27, 33, 27, 22, 28 and 26 yards. Cornell (2-2 overall, 0-2 IIAC) allowed only one touchdown, but the Norse (1-3, 1-2) converted all seven of their trips to the red zone into points. Luther claimed its fifth consecutive win over the Rams, who dropped their 14 th straight game in league play. Luther led 16-0 midway through the third quarter when senior quarterback Anthony Kobler ( Brentwood, Mo./ Brentwood) and the Rams offense began to mount a comeback. Sophomore tight end Alex Macey ( Oceanside, Calif./ Vista) came down with a juggling, 4-yard touchdown reception lying flat on his back that closed the deficit to 16-6 with 6 minutes, 22 seconds remaining in the third quarter. After a Pease field goal, Kobler fired a 32-yard touchdown strike to senior Kyle Krogmann (DeWitt/Northeast) which pulled Cornell to within 19-13 with 11:01 left in the game. Pease then added his fifth and sixth field goals of the game, extending Luther’s lead to 25-13. Cornell junior Travion Hardman ( Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park River Forest) scored on a 1-yard run to make the score 25-20 with 50 seconds remaining. Cornell’s onside kick attempt was recovered by Luther and ended the game. Cornell’s offense turned the ball over three times and was held to 250 total yards, 223 below its season average. Kobler completed 9-of-22 passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns with a pair of first-half interceptions. He and freshman reserve quarterback Dallas Bush ( Plano, Texas/Plano East) were sacked a combined five times. Hardman finished with 86 yards rushing on 15 carries. Krogmann had a team-high 41 receiving yards. Senior middle linebacker Chris Gustafson ( Lakewood, Colo./Bear Creek) once again led the Rams defense with a game-high 15 tackles, marking his 27 th double-digit tackle game of his career. Sophomore safety Don Bladt (Shelby/AHST) had 11 tackles, including a forced fumble and fumble recovery. The Rams travel to play Buena Vista at 1 p.m. Oct. 6 in Storm Lake.
