COMMENCEMENT FULL OF MILESTONES
Commencement was a particularly special – and maybe nerve-wracking – event for John Feldman, an instrumental music education major from Lisbon. After he delivered the senior address, he invited his girlfriend to the stage and proposed, to the applause of his 236 classmates. Also recognized during the ceremony was Anna Doherty, a Spanish and English major from Stillwater, Minn., who is the third graduate in 12 years to leave with a straight 4.0 GPA. Emeritus status was granted to geology professor Paul Garvin and Dennis Damon Moore, dean of the college.

CREWS IN COMMONS, MULTI-SPORT CENTER
The walls are coming down around the Orange Carpet, to be replaced with a railing and three stairway entrances that will more closely connect the Orange Carpet area to the Rathskeller and improve the traffic flow and the look of The Commons. The Ratt will receive new furniture and colors that continue the themes from the recently created Ratt lounge area. The Small Multi-Sport Center is being remodeled to expand the training room, which also will be air-conditioned along with the wrestling room and the Meyer Strength Training Facility.

GINGRICH LAUDS DIMENSIONS
Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich helped launch Cornell’s initiative in the health sciences, Dimensions: The Center for the Science and Culture of Healthcare. “We need a system that starts with wellness, prevention, early testing, and early diagnostic. Getting a person to change his behavior is not science and technology, it is the human side of your Dimensions program,” Gingrich, author of Saving Lives & Saving Money, told a King Chapel audience in May. Read more about Dimensions and Gingrich’s visit in the next Cornell Report.

WHEN IN ROME...
… Cornell students give concerts or play football. Nearly 50 student musicians performed in cathedrals and concert halls throughout Italy during the Term 9 course “Music in Europe,” led by professors Martin Hearne and Lisa Hearne, directors of the Chamber Orchestra and Chamber Singers. Days after the musicians returned to campus, 30 football players, plus coaches and trainers, headed to Italy for an exhibition game against Palmero/Ostia, which the Rams won 62-0.

STUDENTS HONORED, AWARDED GRANTS
- Jeanne Firth '06 received the inaugural Maduff Civil Rights Award, established by Aaron B. Maduff ’92, founding partner of a
Chicago law firm specializing in civil rights litigation. Jeanne is interning with Amnesty International.
- The R.J. McElroy Trust awarded Brandi Logan ’05 a $10,000 per year fellowship which Brandi will use to pursue a PhD in statistics at UCLA.
- Four students and their faculty mentors have been awarded research grants for 05-06 through the Iowa College Foundation. Faculty mentors are Craig Tepper, Craig Teague, Cynthia Strong, and William Dragon.

CORNELL NAMED 'BEST VALUE COLLEGE'
Cornell is one of the nation’s “best value” undergraduate institutions, according to The Princeton Review. The New York-based education services company chose Cornell as one of 81 schools it recommends in the 2006 edition of its book, America’s Best Value Colleges.

THE ART OF MOVEMENT
Frankie Najera, a junior from the San Diego area, literally jumped out of the pages of the Des Moines Register in a story on parkour. Also known as free-running or PK, the activity is a running form of gymnastics invented in the late ’80s by teens in Paris suburbs. Frankie was pictured free-running on campus, running up obstacles such as trees and diving over picnic tables. “You get a sense of accomplishment when you’re doing things people don’t regularly do. … It definitely works all the muscles in your body,” he said.

SHOP THE HILLTOP
The June issue of Chicago magazine reiterated what many antiques hunters already know: eastern Iowa is the place to shop. Lacey’s Antique Prints, A French Accent, Polly Ann’s, Lincoln Café, and Big Creek Market were the Mount Vernon merchants mentioned in the writer’s report from the road.

ALUMNI, CAN YOU SPARE A BED?
Cornell students being placed in the premiere Cornell Fellows program are looking for alumni to host them for a one- or two-month stay. If you have a spare bedroom and would consider helping a student in this way or are interested in learning more, please contact RJ Holmes, Director of the Engagement Program. Students provide their own transportation and meals are not required.

YOUR GIFT COUNTS
Now in the final days of its fiscal year, Cornell still needs an additional 600 alumni gifts by June 30 to maintain its 40 percent participation rate.  With your gift to the Annual Fund, Cornell will be able to compete for the brightest students and attract and retain the best faculty.  Please consider making your online gift to the Annual Fund today – it’s fast, easy and secure - and you will be recognized in the Annual Report & Honor Roll of Donors.  Thank you for making a difference in the lives of Cornell students!

HEADING FOR THE HILLTOP
You’re driving to Mount Vernon. For the first time in months or years, King Chapel rises on the horizon and your heart beats faster in anticipation. Does this scenario sound familiar? Send us your memories of returning to the Hilltop, from your student days or since. We'll excerpt from them in the fall eNews.
