College News

CHALLENGING TIMES
The fundamentals of our nation’s economy have shifted, and Cornell is adapting by modifying spending and reducing expenses whenever possible. In his latest letter to the Cornell community regarding the economy, President Les Garner shares the steps Cornell is taking to ensure its ability to fulfill its educational mission and retain access to deserving students.
 
PFEIFFER FINISHED; ROOD RENOVATION BEGUN
While not new in the truest sense of the word, there’s very little about Pfeiffer that’s old. New rooms, new furniture, a new lounge, improved temperature control, an elevator, new laundry facilities and lounges, and even a high-tech classroom and a meeting room were all ready for students to move into on Jan. 28. The building even smells new.

With that project finished, construction on Rood House has begun. Photos of both and updates on the Rood renovations can be found on Cornell’s Facebook page.
 
MEN'S BASKETBALL CHAMPIONS
The Men’s Basketball team defeated Wartburg 58-56 to capture the program’s first-ever Iowa Conference Tournament title and first national tournament appearance since 1994. The team set records for wins with 21, while senior Griffin LaDew set Cornell career records for points (1,544), 3-point goals made (235), and free throw percentage (88.0). Seniors LaDew and Michael Tierney, and junior Chris Handke made the all-IIAC team, and coach Mike DeGeorge was named IIAC Coach of the Year. Read more...

NCAA WRESTLING ALL-AMERICANS
Junior Nick Northern finished 2nd at the 2009 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships, and Senior Kyle Kehrli and sophomore Kevin Donahue also earned All-American honors. Kehrli and Northern were both repeat All-Americans. Read more...

 
T. EDWIN “ED” ROGERS 1917-2009
Thomas Edwin (”Ed”) Rogers ’39, biology professor emeritus, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, in Iowa City. He was 91. In 1955, Rogers became professor and chair of the Biology Department at Cornell. During his time at Cornell he enjoyed summer appointments at University of Tennessee Medical School, and at the University of Iowa in the Zoology Dept. Alums are invited to post memories of “Doc” Rogers here. A memorial and remembrance service will be held during Homecoming at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, in Allee Chapel.
 
ROBERT DANA CELEBRATION ON APRIL 28
Cornell will host a celebration of and reading by Robert Dana, Professor Emeritus of English and Poet in Residence and former Iowa Poet Laureate, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, in Kimmel Theatre.

 
HAWKINS ALL-AMERICAN
Senior Rachelle Hawkins earned All-America honors with an eighth-place finish in the finals of the mile run at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships. Read more...

 
BRACHOVA AWARDED GRC GRANT
Senior Pavla Brachova was awarded a grant from the Gerace Research Centre (GRC) in San Salvador, Bahamas, in order to isolate and study the genetics of fire coral this June. Brachova also recently represented Cornell at Iowa Private Colleges Day at the Iowa State Capitol, where she presented a poster based on research similar to what she will pursue in the Bahamas. MOCK TRIAL SECURES CHAMPIONSHIP BERTH
The Cornell Mock Trial team secured a berth to the American Mock Trials’ National Championship Tournament by winning their Opening Round Championship Site in Kansas City, Mo. The National Championship Tournament will be held April 17, 18, and 19, in Des Moines, Iowa. The Rams compiled their best record of the season, with seven wins and one loss, beating the University of Colorado, the University of Missouri at Kansas City, and Central Missouri State University. NEW COLLEGE LIBRARIAN
Laurel Whisler has been appointed to the position of college librarian at Cole Library effective July 1. She is assistant director of library services and reference librarian at Southern Wesleyan University in Central, S.C. Read more...

 

HEARD ON CAMPUS
Thomas Mikelson ’58, a former visiting lecturer in ministry at Harvard Divinity School, delivered two public lectures on Black and Latin American Liberation Theology as a Beta Omicrom Distinguished Visitor.

Meanwhile, February brought a slate of lectures celebrating the 150th anniversary of Darwin’s The Origin of Species and the 200th birthday of Darwin himself. Dr. Robert T. Pennock of Michigan State University, Dr. Jill Ehnenn on “Queering Darwin’s Body,” and Dr. Patricia Adair Gowaty of UCLA all delivered lectures centered on Darwin’s work.

Yuliya Demyanyk (top) enlightened a packed room on “Understanding the Subprime Mortgage Crisis” as a Berry Center Distinguished Visitor. Demyanyk, who works for the Cleveland Federal Reserve, predicted the current mortgage crisis prior to the bubble bursting. Read more...

OFF-CAMPUS STUDY
Stunning photography of off-campus destinations can be seen as a result of Cornell’s first-annual Off-campus Studies Photo Contest. Sophomore Megan Maurice took first prize with her photo of the Taj Mahal.

Remaining off-campus courses this year are Greece: Foundations of Education; Newberry Library, Chicago: Medieval and Renaissance Drama; Washington: Geology of the National Parks; Washington: Geomorphology; and Morocco: Advanced Topic in Religion: Islam and Postcoloniality in Contemporary Morocco.

Cammy Watkins ’02 was recognized as one of 70 female eco-achievers in the April issue of Glamour Magazine. Watkins’ work for the Sierra Club’s ‘Cool Cities’ clean energy campaign is highlighted in the story, which includes photos taken of the group in New York City’s Central Park.

President Les Garner was quoted in the Feb. 5 Congressional Quarterly article “Debate Extends to Pell Grant’s Stimulative Merits” on the usefulness of Pell Grant funding in the stimulus bill. Read more...
 
Assistant director of admission Darrell Aaron ’05 was pictured on the front page of the Cedar Rapids Gazette as the paper featured Cornell’s Web cam interviewing process. The article said Cornell was “one of few colleges or universities in Iowa using the webcam technology for admission interviews.”
 
Director of Career Engagement Programs RJ Holmes ’99 was featured in the Jan. 22 edition of “People you should know” feature in Hoopla, a publication of the Cedar Rapids Gazette. “The corridor is like six degrees of RJ. Need to meet someone? Start with him,” offers the article.

Coming Up

ALTERNATIVE SPRING BREAK
South Dakota is a long way from South Padre Island. But that won’t stop 14 students from spending spring break far, far from a beach. Those students will take part in Alternative Spring Break by volunteering at the Oglala Lakota Nation on Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota. They will participate in various work projects across the reservation, helping to rebuild relationships, homes, and lives.
 
THEATRE PRODUCTION 'EURYDICE'
The Cornell theatre department will present a new, tender-hearted adaptation of "Eurydice," the mournful legend of Orpheus, on April 17-19, and 24-25 in Kimmel Theatre. Read more...
 
STUDENT SYMPOSIUM
The 13th Annual Cornell College Student Symposium is scheduled for April 18. The symposium, initiated in 1997, provides a venue in which students may present their scholarly and creative work.
 
RELAY FOR LIFE
Relay for Life is a meaningful and fun overnight event sponsored by the American Cancer Society to raise money to help in the fight against cancer through research, education, advocacy, and patient services. Relay for Life will be held May 15 and 16. Last year this student-run event had 410 participants and raised $56,449.
