$475,000 GIFT FROM STROMER ESTATE
Cornell received a gift of $475,638 from the estate of emeritus professor of speech Walt Stromer, a loyal friend of alumni who is credited with encouraging the career path of Hall of Fame baseball broadcaster Harry Kalas. The gift will be applied to Cornell’s endowment, “enabling new generations to enjoy the extraordinary benefits of a college education,” said President Les Garner.
NEW STUDENTS HIT HILLTOP
Cornell welcomed 357 new students to the Hilltop in August for the traditional orientation week—including a morning of service projects—before the start of classes. Among first-year students, the average GPA is 3.45. Twenty-eight percent were in the top 10 percent of their high school class; 54 percent were in the top 25 percent. The new class represents 34 states and seven foreign countries.
CAUSE FOR CELEBRATION
All alumni are invited to enjoy a festive evening of food and drink, a multimedia show, and a lively performance by alumni of Cornell’s steel drum band, Pandemonium, to kick off the public phase of a major fundraising initiative on Oct. 13 of homecoming weekend. Other weekend events include the traditional alumni convocation, a chance to sit in on Cornell classes, “blockbuster lectures” by Cornell faculty, and a sneak peek at the master plan for the campus—plenty of reasons to celebrate Cornell.
IF YOU BUILD IT...
OK, so Cornell didn’t clear a cornfield, but the west side of campus has a different horizon with the August opening of three-story Clock Tower Hall. Housing 96 upperclass students in 24 suites—most with two single rooms and one double room—the latest residence hall illustrates Cornell’s desire to accommodate requests for private quarters but also with plenty of community gathering spaces.
ACADEMIC HONORS, NEW FACES, NEW PLACES IN ATHLETICS
Brittany Szczepanik was named to the 2006-07 National Golf Coaches Association Division III All-American Scholar Team, and the volleyball team received the 2006-07 Game Plan/American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award for the fourth straight year. New coaches are at the helm in tennis and women’s soccer, and all athletes are enjoying upgrades to the Small Multi-Sport Center.

The awards are given annually to recognize and thank leaders under the age of 40 who have made a significant impact in their business or community or both early in their careers.
