AWARD-WINNING SCHOLARS
Ryan Taugher ’06 of Madison, Wis., (B.A., international relations) and Laura Erceg ’06 of Bemidji, Minn., (B.A.,Russian, sociology) were awarded Fulbright grants, the 18th and 19th Cornellians to receive Fulbrights since 1956. Ryan will spend nine months in Turkey studying and researching the international impact of controlling the region’s water resources; Laura will spend 10 months in Russia doing social work.
TEPPER NAMED 1st RINGER PROFESSOR
Biology professor Craig Tepper has been named the first recipient of the Ringer Distinguished Professorship, established last fall with a $1.5 million gift from Jerry Ringer ’59 and honorary alumna Carole Ringer. The professorship honors Craig for exemplary teaching and scholarship, and for deep commitment to college and community service. The three-year appointment, which begins in fall 2007, will provide release from teaching, an annual salary supplement, and a research fund to be used for scholarly travel and student research assistance.
CAMPUS MAKEOVERS
Ground will be broken this summer for a 104-bed, suite-style residence hall near Pauley-Rorem Hall, part of the first phase of a long-range campus master plan. Other capital projects in the first phase are a Pfeiffer Hall renovation, addition and renovation to The Commons, addition to the library, addition and renovation to West Science Center, and corrective maintenance to King Chapel. Immediate summer improvements are renovations to the exterior of Pfeiffer and renovations to The Commons dining areas, including new furniture, lighting, and carpet, the removal of walls from the scramble area, and new colors in the dining rooms.
YOUNG TRUSTEE SELECTED
Second-generation Cornellian Kent Lehr ’06 has been elected Young Trustee. Kent was the top men’s tennis player for four years, and participated in the first Dimensions internship working alongside Trustee Dr. Larry Dorr ’63 during the Operation Walk medical mission in El Salvador.
ATHLETES HONORED WITH YEAR-END AWARDS
Tennis player Marie Schutte ’06 received the Russell W. Landis Award, which recognizes the individual who over a four-year career has best demonstrated academic excellence, campus leadership, and athletic achievement at Cornell. Marie has been hired as the Chicago regional representative in admission at Cornell.
NEW HEAD COACHES
Dan Schofer joins the Rams as head men’s and women’s cross country coach after four years as an assistant coach at Rhodes College (Tenn.). Cornell’s new men’s soccer coach is Dan Cottrill, who trained with the Football Association in England. Shanda Ness is Cornell’s new softball coach, following eight years at Gustavus Adolphus.

BOOK BOASTS ADVICE FOR PARENTS
How can parents help their students stay on a budget during college? Talk about anticipated expenses before the student leaves for campus, and then after the first semester review how the spending has gone, says Cornell Dean of Students Karla Carney in the Parents’ Guide to College Life. Administrators from more than 90 colleges, parents, and students offer advice on the parent’s role, life in the dorms, safety, health, money matters, and more.
REAL BISHOP PUTS CHESS MATCH IN SPOTLIGHT
Television affiliates around the Midwest carried footage of a live chess match in May featuring a real bishop, Alan Scarfe of the Episcopal Diocese of Iowa. Organized by Chess and Games, members invited the bishop at the urging of college chaplain Catherine Quehl-Engel ’89, an Episcopal priest. Timothy Harrington-Taber ’06 triumphed in the match over associate professor of mathematics Stephen Bean.

After witnessing the tremendous response to the initial Leadership Challenge, Cornell Trustees Neil Eckles ’62 and Jim McWethy ’65 have partnered again to offer Cornell another challenge. The NEW Leadership Challenge will again match, dollar for dollar, all new and increased gifts at the Presidents Society level and above, up to $50,000.
