Cornell College offers a variety of services and resources to help students succeed and, in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Cornell staff members work closely with students who have documented disabilities requiring accommodation to ensure access to the College’s programs, activities and services.
The Coordinator of Academic Support and Advising is the designated office at Cornell College that maintains disability-related documents, certifies eligibility for services, and determines reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities.
Students who need accommodations for learning disabilities must provide documentation from a professional qualified to diagnose learning disabilities. The documentation must be specific about what accommodations are recommended and are ideally dated within three years of admission. See Documentation Guidelines.
This documentation should consist of a current report or evaluation prepared by an appropriate professional. The documentation must:
- Specify a particular medical diagnosis, including when the diagnosis was made and the likely duration of the condition;
- Describe in detail the student's functional limitations created by the diagnosis; and
- Indicate accommodations recommended for the student, along with explanations as to why these accommodations would be useful. Evaluators are encouraged to include appropriate medical reports, relevant medical history, test results, and any other records or data appropriate to assist the the provision of appropriate accommodations.
Students requesting services may schedule a meeting with the disabilities services coordinator as early as possible to discuss their needs and develop an individualized accommodation plan. Ideally, this meeting would take place well before the start of classes.
At the beginning of each course, the student must notify the instructor within the first three days of the term of any accommodations needed for the duration of the course. The instructor will check with the Coordinator of Academic Support and Advising (CASA) to be sure that the student's documentation is on file and that the request accords with the documentation. If the student seeks accommodation assistance from the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL), a professional in the Center will request the specifications for accommodation for the student from the CASA. No accommodations will be made until delivery of the specifications to the CTL. Accommodations will follow the recommendations provided in the student's documentation as agreed to by the College. Accommodations are not retroactive, so please have them in place at the beginning of each course.
If you are traveling abroad, please see the Disabilities Services Coordinator at least a month before you leave campus to make sure accommodations are arranged or alternatives are arranged if there is an unusual situation involved with the location. We do not promise that accommodations can be made outside of the U.S., but if they are reasonable, we will try to make them available to students traveling with Cornell as part of a block course.
