Campus Sustainability

Cornell College is committed to making its campus more environmentally sustainable and has begun a process of identifying goals and objectives to achieve this aim. Our effort will build on opportunities identified in Alyssa Borowske’s senior thesis, entitled Cornell College: A Blueprint for Sustainability, which was completed during the 2006-2007 school year.

As a first step in implementing recommendations outlined in the thesis, the college created an Environmental Sustainability Advisory Committee in the spring of 2007. The committee is chaired by the Vice President for Business Affairs and includes staff, faculty, and students.

In meetings throughout the summer of 2007, the committee established priorities of expanding the recycling program and reducing waste, developing an energy plan which incorporates energy conservation and reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, and establishing an environmentally friendly purchasing policy. The programs and policies which the committee develops will apply to all areas of the college, including academic affairs, residence life, dining services, buildings and grounds, and the administration of the college.
